A shipwreck might end a dream of circumnavigating the globe. Not for the Wilcox family. To triumph, they must rebuild their boat on a remote Pacific island. Damage sustained on the reef and a lack of resources haunt them the rest of the way around the world as they face daunting obstacles, including wild weather, pirates, gun boats, mines and thieves, plus pesky bureaucrats and cockroaches as stubborn as the family. Without a working engine and no way to communicate with the outside world, they struggle to reach home before their broken rig comes crashing down and they run out of food in a trial that tests them to their limits.

Sea Trials Around the World with Duct Tape and Bailing Wire eBook Wendy Hinman

Hinman's book is a rare sort: a sailer's yarn, but passionately and carefully reconstructed from a multitude of first-hand and second-hand sources. I loved every odd detail. I love the attention to every member of the family, including the reluctant daughter who never even wanted to go cruising. The fact that it was written with the perspective that time and multiple viewpoints bring gives it richness and breadth that put it above most other sail-around-the-word tales. Plus the harrowing adventure of a catastrophic shipwreck.. all in all, this is an outstanding story to ponder and contemplate.

Sea Trials Around the World with Duct Tape and Bailing Wire eBook Wendy Hinman Reviews

If you like a good sea story, I recommend this book. Also her follow-up book is as interesting. It is well written and gives a good picture of life on a small boat.
An absolute page turner! Wendy Hinman is compelling in telling the story of her in laws voyage around the world. Her first hand experience with the subject at hand comes across through her ability to tell the story.. I thoroughly enjoyed reading both of her books.
Sea Trials is a fabulous read. Wendy Hinman's writing is visceral and wonderfully descriptive. She had me by the first page of the prologue. This is a book you won't want to put down. Because she had such access to the Wilcox family she was able to thoroughly track the scope of the events, but it is her writing style and her dynamic language that makes this such a great book. You won't be disappointed!
Wendy captures the details of the family's trip-- the trials, the reprieves, the family dynamics and each member' s perspective -- so vividly I felt like I was there. I also loved the honest portrayal of each person's relationship to the long journey and the growth and change along the way. Thank you for sharing this family's rich experience, courage and spirit with those of us moored to the land and unable to undertake this adventurous mode of travel!
This is a thrilling read-along adventure about a family -- before the days of GPS, in a small wooden sailboat, with two young tween/teenagers -- travelling around the world. The details of each port call, the harrowing story of shipwreck and repair, and the (mis)adventures of negotiations, provisioning, and navigation in developed and developing countries makes for a compelling story and very enjoyable read.

This is a great book for sailing enthusiasts, armchair travelers, and anyone interested in the dynamics of a small family in an even smaller space, dealing with both triumph and adversity. It's hard for me to imagine doing what they did, speaking as both a parent and somebody's child, and it inspired some very thoughtful reflection about parenting and risk that has stuck with me.
My quick review of Sea Trials by Wendy Hinman.
This true account of a Bay Area family of 4 sailing around the world in 1973 totally captivated me. While there are plenty of boat knowledge and seamanship details included in this adventure, the story's momentum sails forward on the ways this family meets the hundreds of minor and major challenges that face them over the course of 5 years including a shipwreck on a reef in Fiji.
I finished the book with total admiration for the Wilcox family. Life on board a 40- foot boat with infinite problems needing attention together with 4 different people with different needs (2 in their teen years) sound like a formula for disaster but in the end sheer grit akin to stubborn will and ingenuity win the day and the next and the next. I learned so much about determination, courage, organization, attention to details, applied science and knowledge, geography, other cultures, and appreciation for thinking on one's feet.
This would be a great holiday present for anyone but especially for a young adult and for dreamers and believers everywhere.
Author Wendy Hinman is married to Garth Wilcox, the teenage boy in this book.
Just finished this astonishing story! What a story of grit an determination against overwhelming odds! The authors writing is wonderful - a joy to read. Each member of the family has a significant role in this true life "trip from hell" and each in his or her own way were heroes in my mind! If you want a feel good story about a family cruising adventure that was anything but feel good you will love this book. It's a compelling story that is well written, fast-paced, and you can feel the pain and yes the pleasure that the Wilcox family endured over this 5 year navigation of the globe.
